Job Title: Assistant Grower

Reports to: General Manager & Senior Grower

The Assistant Grower collaborates closely with the General Manager & Senior Grower to oversee the cultivation of a diverse array of liners and finished plants. This role demands a keen intellect and a deep understanding of plant biology to ensure optimal growth conditions and maximize yield potential.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Identify and manage irrigation and nutritional requirements specific to each crop.
• Manage greenhouse environment (climate, light levels, heat levels, etc.).
• Monitor plant growth and root development in greenhouses and nursery.
• Calculate water soluble fertilizer applications through fertigation in greenhouses.
• Ensure crop progress is on track with production schedule; apply corrective actions as necessary to meet production schedule deadlines.
• Execute thorough greenhouse sanitation protocols.
• Strategically apply fungicides, insecticides, and beneficial insects to safeguard plant health.
• Scout for insects & disease pressure by deploying and monitoring sticky cards and traps.

SKILLS:

• Experience with greenhouse irrigation and environmental control systems
• Moderate computer literacy, with the ability to manipulate data in Microsoft Excel and create presentations in Microsoft PowerPoint.
• Demonstrated aptitude for problem-solving and critical thinking.
• Ability to establish priorities within a dynamic work environment.
• Articulate complex concepts clearly and succinctly, fostering effective dialogue with colleagues and management.
• Proficient in English, with exemplary written and verbal communications.
• Basic Spanish speaking skills preferred. The ability to learn basic Spanish to be able to communicate with production team is highly desired.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

• Maintain a flexible schedule, including availability for weekend shifts and occasional early or late hours.
• Maintain meticulous records of crop activities and observations, reflecting a commitment to precision and accuracy.
• Occasional travel to industry events and visiting other nurseries/greenhouses. This will include domestic & international tradeshows, International Plant Propagator Society (IPPS) meetings and other industry networking events.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to multitask and work independently.
• Ability to interact with propagation crew and reassure top quality production (from harvesting to sticking).
• Propose, evaluate, and implement process improvements, leveraging lean flow concepts to enhance operational efficiency.
• Collaborate and support other departments working as a team to reach common company goals.
• Comply with general job training instructions, safe work practices and procedures.
