Job Description

South Hills Eye Associates is looking for a highly motivated, personable and knowledgeable Ophthalmic Medical Assistant to assist us with obtaining detailed information from patients and performing a variety of diagnostic tests to aid in the diagnosis and treatment plan for the patients.

In this role, you will be responsible for assisting the physician with patient flow, obtaining the patient's chief complaint, present illness, medical history, medications, and allergies. Performing various diagnostic tests as required by the physician such as Refractions, Visual Fields, Fundus Photography, OCT, Topography, Pachymetry, updating patient data using our Electronic Medical Records system, maintaining and cleaning all equipment being used and exam rooms, and effectively communicating with the patient and physicians.

To ensure success, the Ophthalmic Medical Assistant should possess 1-3 years’ experience in an ophthalmology setting, the ability to interact with patients and create a welcoming and patient centered environment.

This is a full time position and is located mainly in the Mt. Lebanon Office. The working hours are: Monday-Friday, 8am-4:30pm. This position may require travel to both the Canonsburg and Mt. Lebanon Offices as hours and locations may vary depending upon practice needs.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Obtain Patient History (chief complaint, present illness, medical & ocular history, medications and allergies)
• Visual Acuity Measurement
• Perform various diagnostic testing such as Refractions, Visual Fields, Fundus Photography, OCT, Topography and Pachymetry
• Assist the physician during diagnostics and minor surgical procedures, including instrumentation, sterile preparations and documentation
• Administer topical medication or diagnostic drugs as required by the provider for testing or treatment.
• Assist the physician with patient education pertaining to the treatment prescribed.
• Prepare procedure and exam rooms; inventory equipment and supplies; replenish supplies and equipment.
• Maintaining and cleaning ophthalmic instruments.
• Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, and LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:

• High school diploma or equivalent (required)
• Ophthalmology Assistant COA (preferred)
• 1-3 years’ experience in an  ophthalmology setting (required)
• Knowledge of ocular diseases and systemic diseases affecting the eye.
• Knowledge of basic eye care and hygienic methods and practices involving the treatment of the eye.
• Knowledge of CPT & ICD9-10 coding procedures.
• Knowledge of medical terminology
