Job Description

Overview 

Reporting to the Engagement & Construction Director, the Senior Landscape Construction Manager will oversee the construction of new food forests in addition to supporting their design thus transforming underutilized land into thriving green spaces that benefit the entire Boston community. This includes managing all aspects of the projects, from design to grand opening, with a keen eye towards ensuring that each project is completed on time, on scope, and within budget. This person will manage end-to-end development of between 5-10 new food forests at a time.

The ideal candidate has experience in park building and landscape construction management, with a balance of project management skills and an entrepreneurial mindset. They are a creative problem-solver, detail-oriented, and an effective communicator who can build relationships with diverse stakeholders. They have strong project management experience, and have led the construction process of landscape or park development. A passion for food forests and a commitment to community collaboration in creating sustainable green spaces is essential. 

Responsibilities

Construction management

  • Manage contractors to ensure construction projects are completed on time, within budget, and according to specifications.
  • Manage infrastructure construction, e.g., mainline water installation, solar power systems, irrigation systems.
  • Build partnerships with construction suppliers, e.g., for fruit tree provision, materials, etc.
  • Develop and implement safety protocols, and ensure they are followed. 
  • Report weekly, and monthly on progress, indicators, to the Engagement & Construction Director.
  • Ensure projects are efficiently, effectively and safely implemented in accordance with organizational procedures, local regulations, contracts and policies. 
  • Meticulously manage project documentation, including field reports, permitting and inspection requirements, and project budget
  • Support community engagement in partnership with the Community Engagement Manager to foster engagement throughout the construction process, keeping stakeholders informed and involved.

Manage funding & land transfer process with the City of Boston 

  • Manage land acquisition and transfer for food forest sites.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in government and community organizations to move projects forward.

Support FF scoping & design support

  • Create new park base plans and site condition plans to guide construction and ensure adherence to zoning regulations.
  • Obtain necessary permits and demonstrate a thorough understanding of local zoning ordinances.
 Qualifications
  • Either a Bachelor’s Degree & 5 years of related experience, or 5-7 years of related experience with demonstrated success in construction of landscape projects (parks, residential landscapes, etc) 
  • Demonstrated experience with the design, communication, and documentation of construction processes.
  • Ability to read and execute on construction plans; can read site documentation and site inventory .
  • Experience managing a detail-intensive process from end to end with little errors and clear communication with key stakeholders 
  • Experience with landscape design, ecological urban agriculture or permaculture. 
  • Experience building and managing relationships effectively to meet project goals.
  • Ability to use Adobe Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator)
  • Experience proactively communicating goals and updates, and eliciting input from various stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Knowledge of Boston’s urban agriculture sector is a plus.
  • Experience with land acquisition processes is a plus
  • Spanish proficiency is a plus.

Location
  • This is a Boston, Massachusetts-based position that will require frequent travel between Boston neighborhoods.
  • The position will include a mix of in-person and virtual/remote work. 
  • Significant time will be spent meeting with community members and managing on-site food forest construction, which will include frequent nights and weekends (e.g., guiding a neighborhood food forest construction day on a Saturday, attending a City budget approval meeting on a Thursday night).
  • BFFC is committed to sustainability and supports staff in taking time off to balance evening and weekend hours.
