Job Description

Family Life Academy Charter School (commonly called FLACS) is a nonprofit network of high-performing schools in the South Bronx. U.s. History Teacher Job Description

We are looking for dynamic educators who are able to:

  • Implement Curriculum:
    • Develop and implement units based on the NYS Social Studies Framework for U.S. History.
    • Create academically rigorous and culturally relevant lesson plans, materials, and assessments that prepare students for the NYS Regents Exams, Advanced Placement courses, and collegiate level coursework.
  • Engage Students:
    • Teach engaging, differentiated lessons that meet students’ diverse needs using a variety of teaching strategies, including the integration of technology in the classroom.
    • Facilitate student-led discussions, debates, and collaborative projects that deepen understanding of U.S. history and foster critical thinking.
  • Integrate Literacy:
    • Focus on the integration of literacy within the U.S. History curriculum by helping students develop proficiency in reading, writing, and public speaking.
    • Use targeted intervention strategies to support all learners, ensuring progress in academic and literacy skills.
  • Assess and Reflect:
    • Develop and administer formative and summative assessments, including document-based questions, source analyses, and thematic essays.
    • Analyze student performance data to refine instructional practices and close the achievement gap for all students.
    • Reflect on lessons, student data, and current educational trends to continually improve teaching practices and student outcomes.
  • Collaborate and Communicate:
    • Teach both independently and collaboratively with colleagues to develop interdisciplinary projects and share best practices.
    • Maintain regular communication with students, parents, and staff regarding academic progress, using online platforms, report cards, and progress reports.
  • Professional Development:
    • Participate in ongoing professional learning, mentorship, coaching, and staff development.
    • Contribute to fostering a school culture of family, inclusion, and a lifelong love of learning by building positive relationships with students, parents, and fellow educators.
Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree is required; a Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Prior satisfactory teaching experience preferred.
  • New York State Teaching Certification in Social Studies (grades 7-12)
  • Dual certification in English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) or Students with Disabilities is a plus.
  • Professionalism, superb written and verbal communication skills, excellent organizational skills, and timeliness.
  • NYS Dept of Education fingerprint clearance and criminal background checks.
