Job Description

The Principal Gifts Officer leads the development and execution of a strategic plan to secure investments of $1,000,000 and above to support the mission and vision of FIU and advance the campaign priorities, institutional strategic plan. The position requires the experience and expertise necessary to foster and build relationships with high-capacity donors and prospects. Working with the Division of University Advancement's senior leadership and in collaboration with university academic and administrative leadership, the Principal Gifts Officer will serve as the lead facilitator and manager. S/he will work to effectively engage and respond to these individuals as partners, according to their interests and expertise, and alignment with the University's mission and strategic plan.

  • Serves as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) on fundraising strategy and execution for principal donors with the potential to engage with the University at $1M+.
  • Works across and in collaboration with university leadership, both academic and non- academic to identify, cultivates and engages donor prospects capable of making principal level gifts. Serves as the lead manager in coordinating and facilitating all cultivation and solicitation activities.
  • Works effectively to manage and support leadership volunteers in their work to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward principal gift level donors. Utilizes staff, volunteers and other stakeholders to gain access to and close significant gifts from new prospects.
  • Develops cultivation and solicitation strategies for a select group of the University¿s most generous donors. Builds and manages network of relationships with prospective donors involving University administrators and faculty. Facilitates and coordinates all communication with these prospects and among the prospect's university relationships. Promotes positive relations with these individuals.
  • Manages a portfolio between 50 to 60 principal gift (multi-million) donor prospects that includes some of the most influential and highly valued University volunteers and donors, providing leadership for highly complex gift solicitations and negotiations to secure major gift commitments. Evaluates various gift opportunities and giving vehicles and recommends the most suitable for a particular donor.
  • Strategize, plans and evaluates the principal gifts program; develop and report on qualitative and quantitative performance metrics. Includes measurable targets for each fiscal year (e.g., personal visits, stewardship activities, solicitations). Meets the annual goal for personal contacts as established by the Associate or Assistant Vice President for Development. Meets agreed- upon annual fundraising goal as set jointly by the Associate or Assistant Vice President.
  • Monitors progress towards achieving revenue goals. Reports regularly to the Associate or Assistant Vice President.
  • Provides advice and strategy relating to campaign and development issues and participates in the design and implementation of goals and objectives to achieve both annual and long-term fundraising efforts for the assigned unit.
  • Attends all development meetings as required.
  • Works closely with the Associate or Assistant Vice President of Development, Executive Director of Leadership Giving and Capital Campaign Planning and internal contacts such as Deans, Directors, Faculty, Officers, and other Development staff to consult on university needs, to formulate strategies to promote prospect engagement with the University and to identify potential high-level donors.
  • Leads collaborative efforts to develop strategy for prospects shared by more than one college/school/unit; facilitates action plan and monitors implementation of the strategy. Facilitate productive relationships daily between donors and University administrators, faculty, and staff to ensure effectiveness of programs.
  • Implements policies and procedures for fundraising activities at the University.
  • Documents contact and prospect moves, tracks progress using Raiser's Edge, and adheres to University Advancement prospect management guidelines and protocol.
  • Drafts, designs, and prepares proposals needed for the solicitation of prospective donors. Collaborate with Editorial Services as appropriate.
  • Drafts, designs, and prepares personalized materials needed for the recognition and stewardship of donors, including gift acknowledgment. Collaborates with Donor Relations and Stewardship as appropriate.
  • Develops and/or implements a strategically planned travel schedule to meet with prospects and donors, aligned with strategies and outcomes, in consultation with the Associate or Assistant Vice President of Development.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and ten (10) years of experience in business, corporate development, foundations, and/or grants; OR fourteen (14) years of experience in business, corporate development, foundations, and/or grants; OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

Salary

$160,000-$180,000
